In order to attract more investment in the renewable energy sector to achieve the ambitious capacity enhancement envisaged by the Government, a clear and unambiguous regulatory policy (both at the centre and at state level, like in transmission and power distribution), a positive tax regime coupled with availability of long term financing and incentives in the form of tax holidays and ease of land procurement would be our expectations from Budget, 2022.

With the pandemic entering the tail end phase, industry looks forward to a growth-oriented budget which not only rejuvenates and energises consumer demand, but also facilitates private investments, and boosts job creation in various sectors. Since private investment will lag a bit - emerging out of the pandemic - the Government should not hesitate to invest in significant value-creating infrastructure as well. Rolling out measures to improve ease of doing business is also imperative to bring back industry confidence and also help leverage favourable geo-political mindsets to attract global scale capacities into India.

I hope the upcoming Budget will discuss ways to boost demand and create jobs ensuring the economy’s growth accelerates further. From a PE/ VC perspective specifically, it would be good to see more streamlining of regulations which will encourage private investments.

I expect this budget to be progressive and forward looking with a greater emphasis on higher budgetary allocation to transmission infrastructure projects to facilitate additional 500 GW of RE projects. It is also pertinent the ministry recognises electricity under GST that will help in overall reduction of the tariff to the consumers.
