Overview

With over 25 years of compliance and regulatory leadership in banking and capital markets, Nishith Mehta has a proven record of shaping strategic risk frameworks and advising on complex, multi-jurisdictional compliance and operational risk matters across the Asia Pacific region.

His expertise spans the full spectrum of global banking and markets experience – broker-dealer operations, investment banking, credit products, wealth management, non-banking finance, and fixed income and currency trading. Over the course of his career, Nishith has led organisations through high-stakes regulatory challenges – from rigorous inspections and enforcement actions to large-scale post-crisis remediation programmes that restored regulatory confidence and improved the effectiveness of the risk and compliance function. Notably, he has navigated OCC and FRB consent orders in the U.S. and spearheaded strategic engagements with RBI, SEBI, and other APAC regulators, influencing policy interpretation and supervisory outcomes.

In his previous role, Nishith was the Co-Head APAC Compliance and Operational Risk at a leading global banking institution and led a 130+ member regional compliance and operational risk team with oversight of multiple Managing Directors. He was a member of the APAC Executive Committee and participated in several global and regional governance forums that shaped enterprise risk strategy.

Under his leadership, the function delivered quantifiable reductions in regulatory findings, accelerated remediation timelines, and embedded first-line and second-line synergies to strengthen business accountability.

He also served as the Chief Compliance Officer for all regulated entities of this leading global financial institution in India, overseeing end-to-end compliance and regulatory affairs across banking, investment banking, research, and securities market activities. In this capacity, Nishith had direct accountability for engagement with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), ensuring adherence to complex prudential, conduct, and market regulations. His remit spanned policy design, regulatory filings, inspections, supervisory interactions, and resolution of compliance issues, enabling the franchise to maintain a strong regulatory standing while supporting its strategic business objectives.

Nishith is regarded as a trusted advisor to boards and business leaders, combining strategic foresight with operational precision. His strengths lie in aligning diverse stakeholders, building high-performing teams, and embedding robust frameworks to address emerging risks compliance frontiers such as data governance, trading risk, conduct risk, and information security. He has a track record of pre-empting regulatory trends and operationalising effective compliance responses, ensuring institutions remain ahead of supervisory expectations. His approach blends global best practices with nuanced regional insight, enabling institutions to thrive in an increasingly complex and evolving risk and compliance environment.
