Trilegal Successfully Hosts the 2nd Annual Japan-India Briefing and Dinner in Tokyo

Trilegal hosted the 2nd Japan-India Briefing and Dinner on the theme ‘Exploring current dynamics and prospects for business and investment’ on Thursday, 28th November 2024, at the Ritz Carlton, Tokyo, Japan. H.E Mr. Sibi George, Ambassador of India to Japan, graced the event and delivered the inaugural address. The keynote address was delivered by Mr. Yuchi Takano, Executive Committee Member, Executive Managing Officer, General Counsel, Mitsui & Co., Ltd, who spoke about Mitsui’s journey in India, learnings, and recommendations to Japanese companies for success in India. This exclusive event brought together distinguished business leaders and policymakers to explore the immense opportunities in the India-Japan corridor.

Opening the evening, Charandeep Kaur, Partner at Trilegal, welcomed the attendees and reflected on Trilegal’s long-standing relationship with Japan. She highlighted the firm’s tailored approach, built around a deep understanding of the Japanese way of doing business.

Joining Charandeep at the event were a group of partners with extensive experience in areas that hold great significance in the Japan-India corridor: Sai Krishna Bharathan (Corporate and Real Estate), Shankh Sengupta (Disputes), Neeraj Menon (Energy and Infrastructure), Swarnima (Labour and Employment), Ganesh Rao (Asset Management and Funds), and Samsuddha Majumder (Tax).

In his inaugural address, H.E. Mr. Sibi George, Ambassador of India to Japan, emphasised the thriving partnership between India and Japan, describing it as a beacon of resilience in an uncertain global economy. “India is a critical part of Japan’s resilient supply chain, and in today’s complex geopolitical landscape, supply chain resilience is what we need,” said Ambassador George.

Delivering the evening’s special address, Mr. Yuichi Takano, Executive Committee Member, Executive Managing Officer, and General Counsel of Mitsui & Co., Ltd, underscored India’s demographic and economic advantages. Mr. Takano elaborated on Mitsui’s extensive investments in India and offered actionable insights for companies exploring the Indian market:

  • Diverse Opportunities: From renewable energy and electric vehicles to e-commerce and infrastructure, there is the attractiveness of the Indian market and potential in India’s National Infrastructure Pipeline. The Indian government is actively attracting foreign direct investment and continues to develop an investment-friendly environment for foreign companies.
  • Strategic Positioning: India’s demographic dividend and strategic links to the Middle East and Africa make it a pivotal partner for global businesses.
  • Navigating Challenges: He emphasized the importance of building strong local partnerships and deepening understanding of culture and values to overcome regulatory complexities and respond appropriately to changing needs.

Highlighting recent initiatives, he said, “As the people of both countries deepen their understanding of each other’s countries and cultures, mutual trust between the two countries will be further strengthened”. Mr. Takano concluded by expressing the hopes, “I hope the mutual partnership between the Japanese and Indian business communities will be strengthened and that economic relations between the two countries will be further enhanced, leading to the further development of the two countries and the growth of the global economy.

In her concluding remarks, Charandeep Kaur celebrated the evening as a testament to the thriving synergy between India and Japan. “This partnership is not just about economic collaboration; it is about transformative opportunities, and a future shaped by mutual respect and trust,” she said. She highlighted that transformative investments, groundbreaking infrastructure projects, and vibrant cultural exchanges represent not just a shared history, but a promising future. “Moments like these inspire us to continue fostering partnerships that redefine global business,” Charandeep concluded.
