Deal: NGT Upholds Compliance Efforts by Delhi International Airport Limited in Maintaining Noise Levels

In a recent judgment, the National Green Tribunal (‘NGT’) deliberated on a challenge raised by the Society for Protection of Culture, Heritage, Environment, Traditions, and Promotion of National Awareness against Delhi International Airport Limited (;DIAL’). The challenge alleged non-compliance with noise level regulations outlined by the Ministry of Environment and Forests (‘MoEF’) in its notification dated June 18, 2018 (‘MoEF Notification’) regarding the noise levels to be maintained at the airport. Despite the plea’s contentions, the NGT ruled in favor of DIAL. Trilegal, representing DIAL, the developer, and operator of Indira Gandhi International Airport (‘IGIA’), successfully defended against the challenge before the NGT Principal Bench.
The NGT’s judgment, rendered on March 21, 2024, recognized the efforts of DIAL in managing noise levels at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA). DIAL diligently established the Airport Noise Zone, approved by DGCA, and installed five Noise Monitoring Terminals for continuous monitoring, ensuring compliance with regulatory norms. Employing Noise Models in accordance with noise limit prescribed in the MoEF Notification, DIAL demonstrated commitment to noise reduction. The NGT acknowledged these measures, emphasizing transparency and public awareness. It mandated DIAL and relevant authorities to display aircraft noise levels on their websites, facilitating stakeholder monitoring and regulatory compliance.
This decision signifies a significant stride towards environmental sustainability and aviation sector compliance.
